Worried about your high bad cholesterol level? WebMD has a Cholesterol Management Center that you can visit to learn more about cholesterol and how you can properly manage your cholesterol level. The website provides tools and resources and information on diet, exercise, tips for avoiding heart disease and natural cholesterol treatment. Links to tools and resources are below. An short extract is also provided below to give you an indication of what the website covers.

Tools & Resources

High cholesterol is associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, which can include coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. High cholesterol has also been linked to diabetes and high blood pressure. To prevent or manage these conditions, take steps to lower your total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol if they are elevated.

Cholesterol and Coronary Heart Disease

The main risk associated with high cholesterol is coronary heart disease. Your blood cholesterol level has a lot to do with your chances of getting heart disease. If cholesterol is too high, it builds up in the walls of your arteries. Over time, this build-up (called plaque) causes hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). Atherosclerosis causes arteries to become narrowed, slowing blood flow to the heart muscle. Reduced blood flow to the heart can result in angina (chest pain) or in a heart attack in cases when a blood vessel is blocked completely.

Cholesterol and Stroke

The main risk associated with high cholesterol is coronary heart disease. Your blood cholesterol level has a lot to do with your chances of getting heart disease. If cholesterol is too high, it builds up in the walls of your arteries. Over time, this build-up (called plaque) causes hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). Atherosclerosis causes arteries to become narrowed, slowing blood flow to the heart muscle. Reduced blood flow to the heart can result in angina (chest pain) or in a heart attack in cases when a blood vessel is blocked completely.

Cholesterol and Peripheral Vascular Disease

High cholesterol also has been linked to peripheral vascular disease, which refers to diseases of blood vessels outside the heart and brain. In this condition, fatty deposits build up along artery walls and affect blood circulation, mainly in arteries leading to the legs and feet.

Cholesterol and Diabetes

Diabetes can upset the balance between HDL and LDLcholesterol levels. People with diabetes tend to have LDL particles that stick to arteries and damage blood vessel walls more easily. Glucose (a type of sugar) attaches to lipoproteins (a cholesterol-protein package that enables cholesterol to travel through blood). Sugarcoated LDL remains in the bloodstream longer and may lead to the formation of plaque. People with diabetes tend to have low HDL and high triglyceride (another kind of blood fat) levels, both of which boost the risk of heart and artery disease.

Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure (also called hypertension) and high cholesterol also are linked. When the arteries become hardened and narrowed with cholesterol plaque and calcium (atherosclerosis), the heart has to strain much harder to pump blood through them. As a result, blood pressure becomes abnormally high. High blood pressure is also linked to heart disease.

High intake of cholesterol shown to actually repair damaged brains!

High intake of cholesterol shown to actually repair damaged brain

Friday, June 22, 2012 by: Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

cholesterol

(NaturalNews) Including high-cholesterol foods as part of a healthy diet may not be the poor dietary choice we have all been told it is, suggests a new study published in the journal Nature Medicine. It turns out that cholesterol actually helps increase production of an important component of the nervous system that facilitates proper nerve cell communication, and prevents the onset of brain diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.

The study focused specifically on patients with a condition known as Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD), in which nerve cells are unable to properly manufacture protective myelin sheaths. It is these myelin sheaths, which are composed of lipid fats and proteins, that allow nerves to communicate and send appropriate electrical signals that trigger movement and cognition, and that protect nerves from damage.

Cholesterol, which is commonly dismissed as harmful and something that people should avoid, actually contributes to producing and maintaining myelin sheaths. Without it, as evidenced by the recent studies, individuals with PMD -- and potentially all individuals -- are at a higher risk of developing cognitive illness and brain degradation. And particularly those with PMD, low-cholesterol diets are almost sure to leave them exceptionally prone to nerve damage.

"This six-week-long cholesterol treatment delayed the decline in motor coordination," wrote the scientists in their report. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Experimental Medicine in Germany fed a group of mice with PMD a high-cholesterol diet for six weeks, as well as another group of PMD mice a low-cholesterol diet. Those on the high-cholesterol diet stopped experiencing cognitive decline, while the low-cholesterol mice continued to get worse.

Healing Herbs!

I grow my own herbs -- rosemary, basil, chives, mint, marjoram, sage and thyme. Herbs are very essential to adding flavor to food and drinks and also are critical in cutting back on food items that one has to use in moderation. In addition, herbs have beneficial healing properties. There is nothing more refreshing than a sprig of mint in your green tea or fruit drink! Rosemary and mint go well with lemonade and cucumber!

No matter where you live, you can create a herb garden in a box, small patch in your garden, or in containers. This year I intend to add lemon verbena, one of my favorite herbs, to my herb garden.

Here is an article about healing herbs that includes an herb that I have never used -- 'Ashwagandha' which apparently has a lot of beneficial healing properties including the reduction of inflammation! I will ask about this herb when I am next in my favorite Indian food store. I would like to try it so that I can le you know more about it. If you already know about Ashwagandha, please feel free to share what you know.

Healing Herb News You Can Use

Healing Herb News You Can Use
Ashwagandha has amazing immunity-boosting benefits: According to The Herb Companion, taking one to two teaspoons twice or three times daily of Ashwagandha, a shrub extract used widely in Ayurvedic healing– or one 500 mg capsule of ashwagandha three times daily — is plenty to obtain its energy-boosting power.  This time-tested herb boosts immunity; improves memory and learning capacity; reduces stress; balances blood sugar; lowers bad cholesterol levels and reduces inflammation.
Basil works against acne: recent research has shown that sweet basil oil and holy basil oil can help combat acne. This is thanks to the antibacterial properties of basil.
Rosemary increases brain power: Researchers from Northumbria University in the United Kingdom found that the amount of 1,8-cineole, a main chemical in rosemary oil, in the blood is linked with improved brain performance.
Parsely is effective against cancer: Studies show that myristicin, an organic compound found in the essential oil of parsley, not only inhibits tumor formation (especially in the lungs), but also activates the enzyme glutathione-S-transferase, which helps the molecule glutathione attach to, and fight against, oxidized molecules.
Cilantro can crush salmonella: In a recent study led by Isao Kubo, Ph.D at the University of Berkeley, laboratory tests have shown that this component of cilantro is two times as potent as the commonly-used allopathic antibiotic medicine gentamycin. This makes it a potent weapon against the dangerous salmonella bacteria.
Mint is a stomach soother: repeated trials on the benefits of mint have established it to be very effective against stomach disorders ranging from irritable bowel to dyspepsia and cramps.

Children's stored vaccines compromised, expired: federal investigation

There is enough fear and anxiety among parents without the storage of Vaccines adding fuel to an already difficult situation. I am all for vaccinations and early childhood vaccinations. However, a bad batch of vaccines or vaccines that are not properly stored could severely compromise the health of children and people with vulnerable immune systems

Doctors need to be more careful so that they do not feed into the fear of vaccinations!

Children's stored vaccines compromised, expired: federal investigation

Wednesday, June 06, 2012
Denise Dador

An inspection of the federal Vaccines for Children  (VFC) Program finds some vaccines may be compromised. The investigation discovered frozen and expired vaccine doses in doctors' offices and clinics.

The findings could apply to a much wider lot of vaccines since many of the same clinics that provide free immunizations for low-income children also give shots to insured children.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) turned the microscope on itself and was shocked when the Health and Human Services inspector general found severe storage violations in the federal vaccine program. Ice was found on flu shots, which shouldn't be frozen. Expired doses were also found.

"We found three of four providers were storing the vaccines in temperatures that were either too hot or too cold," said HHS Regional Inspector General Dwayne Grant.

Seventy-five percent of 45 doctors' offices and clinics inspected were storing vaccines improperly.

10 Foods That Fight Inflammation

10 Foods That Fight Inflammation

There are many drugs and some foods  that help fight inflammation. Health Central has compiled a  list of 10 foods that have been found to decrease inflammation in the body.

One of the food items that is missing from the list is the spice Turmeric (Curcumin). I now put Turmeric in almost everything thing that I eat because of its cancer and inflammation reducing properties.

Another food item that also has inflammation reduction and other properties is aloe vera! I add edible aloe vera gel to smoothies, and use aloe vera topically on my skin.

A lot of discomfort and pain that we feel is due to inflammation or internal organ and external parts of our bodies. If you can reduce inflammation, you can reduce all of pain and discomfort and improve the proper functioning of your body and organs.

Now I put Turmeric (Curcumin) in my smoothie, and also in soups, stews, tuna, salmon, crab and egg salads, and salad dressings! I can't get enough of it!

I purchase Turmeric from an Indian food store. I recommend that you purchase spices from a source with high traffic and turnover to ensure that you get a fresh and potent spice. Also, ensure that the brand is reputable, and if possible purchase the organic version.

Here is an article by Dr. Mercola on the Health Benefits of Turmeric (Curcumin).

  • The antioxidant resveratrol and curcumin (the active substance of the spice turmeric) both show promise as natural chemosensitizers—substances that can help overcome resistance to chemotherapy drugs
  • Both nutrients have a wide spectrum of anti-cancer actions and functions
  • By modulating inflammatory pathways and inflammatory molecules, resveratrol may also help alleviate many of the debilitating side effects of conventional cancer treatment, such as wasting, fatigue, depression, neuropathic pain, cognitive impairment and sleep disorders
  • Among all nutrients, curcumin has the most evidence-based literature supporting its use against cancer. Researchers have found that curcumin can affect more than 100 different pathways, once it gets into a cell
  • Epigenetic regulation
  • constitutes an important mechanism by which dietary components can selectively activate or inactivate gene expression. Both curcumin and resveratrol induce epigenetic changes

Now it seems that every benign thing that we do is fraught with danger. I actually thought the dental bitewings that the friendly dental assistant inserts into one's mouth and then asks you to clamp down on for an x-ray is pretty safe. Turns out  -- not so much! This is just more radiation that increases your risk of getting brain tumors

It might be best to have your most recent dental x-rays pulled up by your dentist's office prior to your visit to ensure that your dentist does not have to order new x-rays that may not be needed.
